Hunting in Atikokan

Fall happens quickly in Northwestern Ontario. Last week’s lush hiking trails begin to transform and the forest floor, once thick with various foliage starts to thin in preparation for our long winters. The multitude of greens gives way to a burst of yellows, oranges, reds, and browns; The air becomes crisp while the ground still clings to summer’s warmth and that can mean only one thing: It’s hunting season.

Atikokan is home to numerous avid hunters with the knowledge and experience of many generations. As a novice hunter, the advice, patience, and guidance from these experts has been invaluable in developing hunting skills while also instilling a passion for wildlife conservation.

With the sheer volume of accessible crown land, it is little wonder why hunting is so popular. There is no shortage of old gravel and logging roads, trails, and (for the adventurous) unkept paths to traverse to find that perfect hunting spot – stumbling across a long-forgotten road that you’re not sure ends in fifty meters around the bend or a few kilometres and uttering “let’s find out”.

For big game hunters, we have deer, moose, and black bear. If hunting small game is more up your alley, we have spruce grouse, ruffed grouse, and snowshoe hare as well as a variety of migratory birds.

Contained within hunting zones 11A, 11B, and 12B, Atikokan is home to copious amounts of huntable land. With the ever-changing landscape of boreal forest, swamps, and lakes and rivers of varying sizes, harvestable wildlife is abundant.
